Community News

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) that will significantly expand health services available to the Mathare community through Mama Africa Pendo.

About the Partnership

This collaboration, formalized in December 2025, enables us to offer free HIV testing and counseling, reproductive health services, and referrals for treatmentall at our community centre. AHF will provide training for our staff, medical supplies, and ongoing technical support.

"This partnership aligns perfectly with our holistic approach to community development," says our Executive Director, Mary Njeru. "Health and education are inseparableyou cannot have one without the other."

Services Now Available

Starting this month, community members can access:

  • Free, confidential HIV testing and counseling
  • Family planning services and education
  • STI screening and treatment referrals
  • Maternal health consultations
  • Adolescent reproductive health education

Addressing a Critical Need

Mathare has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Nairobi, yet access to testing and treatment remains limited. Many residents, particularly women and youth, face barriers including stigma, cost, and distance to health facilities.

By bringing these services directly into the community through a trusted organization, we hope to remove these barriers and encourage more people to know their status and access care.

Community Response

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. In the first week alone, over 150 people accessed the new health services.

"I've been wanting to get tested for years but was always afraid," shares one community member. "Knowing I can do it here, with people I trust, made all the difference."
