Success Stories

When Kevin first arrived at Mama Africa Pendo Rescue Centre in 2015, he was a malnourished 10-year-old who had been living on the streets of Mathare for two years. Today, at 20 years old, Kevin is a second-year student at Kenyatta University studying Social Work.

"I still remember the day Mama Mary found me sleeping under a market stall," Kevin recalls with emotion. "She didn't just give me foodshe gave me a future."

The Long Road to Recovery

Kevin's transformation didn't happen overnight. It took months of trauma counseling, nutritional rehabilitation, and patient mentorship before he was ready to return to formal education. Our MHPSS (Mental Health and Psychosocial Support) team worked closely with him to address the deep psychological wounds left by years of neglect and abuse.

"The counseling sessions were difficult at first," Kevin admits. "I had built walls around myself. But slowly, with the support of the counselors and the other children at the centre, I began to open up and trust again."

Academic Excellence Against All Odds

Despite joining primary school three years behind his peers, Kevin showed remarkable determination. He spent extra hours studying, often staying up late with borrowed textbooks. By the time he sat for his KCPE exams, he scored 387 marksa score that earned him a scholarship to a national secondary school.

"Education is my way of honoring everyone who believed in me," Kevin says. "Every time I feel tired or discouraged, I remember where I came from and what Mama Africa Pendo gave me."

Giving Back to the Community

Now pursuing a degree in Social Work, Kevin regularly returns to the rescue centre to mentor younger children. He leads study groups and shares his story to inspire others who are just beginning their journey of recovery.

"I want these children to know that their past doesn't define their future," Kevin says. "If a street kid from Mathare can become a university student, anything is possible."

Kevin's story is one of over 350 children whose lives have been transformed through Mama Africa Pendo's programs. Your support makes stories like his possible.
